TROPY / TRIALS

Przyśnił mi się promienny i pełen wigoru, więc zapytałem: Czy Ty żyjesz? A on wzruszył ramionami, jakby chciał powiedzieć: Nie zadawaj głupich pytań!

Jakkolwiek fotografie przywołują z mroku kształty, znajome sytuacje i ciała, zatrzymane w przypadkowym momencie - to dzisiaj powodują przede wszystkim tęsknotę, czy ja wiem?

Selekcjonował swój krąg, często kapryśnie i niesprawiedliwie, czasem z rozmysłem dobierając ludzi do wyznaczonych im ról.

Kolorowi nici przypisywał sens metaforyczny, pisał o ciałach dziewczyny i chłopca „połączonych białą nicią ze sobą i czarną nicią z chmurą „metafizyczną”, utkaną misternie nad nimi.”

Tworzyły tkankę mocną i sprężystą, niełatwą do zerwania.

Do prób przed publicznym pokazem „Miłości” Jung zaangażował mężczyznę i kolejno dwie kobiety z kręgu najbliższych przyjaciół.

Horyzont wolności byłby więc akceptowanym ograniczeniem do nakazów czerpanych z Ewangelii? Byłbyż  to oficjalny autoportret Krzysia?

* * *

Inne publiczne introspekcje Krzysia to odpowiedź na pytanie Grzegorza Kowalskiego "Czy chciałbyś powrócić do łona matki?” i wypowiedź do zbioru „Ja - Hitler” Wiktora Gutta.

Z całą pewnością najbardziej interesowali go ludzie i życie, sztukę traktował jako konieczne uzupełnienie życia. Bywał zachłannie, euforycznie zakochany i tragicznie nieszczęśliwy, gdy doznawał odrzucenia.

Któż pomyśli o nim we wszechświecie

*Wszystkie cytaty, jeśli nie podano inaczej, pochodzą z tekstu: Krzysztof Jung, Repassage 2 [w kat.:] Sigma Galeria Repassage Repassage 2 Re'Repassage, Galeria Zachęta, Warszawa 1993, s. 109-111

He appeared in my dream, radiant and vigorous, so I asked him, ‘Are you alive?’ And he shrugged his shoulders, as though he wanted to say, ’Don’t ask stupid questions!’ Condescendingly, he made me feel that he had comprehended the mystery, still inaccessible to me.

***

This is, however, how the matter stands: Krzyś keeps moving away. His presence - often intrusive, sometimes outright unbearable - recedes with time and only by exerting our will (in  a dream?) we manage to bring him back. Since Krzyś burst into many people’s lives, his posthumous ’existence’ is fragmentary and varied like the people who remember him. As much remains of him as we keep in our memory, as long as we remember. The photographs will be preserved, and also the objects he used, and his works which are materialised synthesis of his presence in this world. The paintings and drawings, seen in this light, gain special meaning. Taken out of drawers and couch chests, taken off the walls, they exist in the same form as they did when he put aside his brushes and pencils. He finished them once for all and this ‘once for all’ is likely to stay unchanged. Even if they are to be read and interpreted in various ways, they will remain a firm point of reference, a source instrumental in the verification of judgements. His ephemeral works - which people called in short ‘performances’ and he labelled ‘plastic theatre’ - are a different matter. What is left of them are the photographs and statements written by the participants. Jung’s theatre developed in time and space, scattered among the participants, dependent on their ability to perceive and experience. The accumulation of intense emotions ‘there and then’ creates emptiness ‘here and now’. The facts vanish in a  kind of collective amnesia and what remains is hard to be defined and described; nevertheless, it is felt as something important but manifests itself primarily as painful insufficiency. Although the photographs summon from the dark the shapes, familiar situations and bodies, frozen at some odd moment, they awaken now our longing for - how can I tell? - our youth? There is a myth-creating potential in the traces incommensurate with phenomena, in the suppositions rather than verified judgements.

***

Krzyś did not theorise; little did he concern himself with the classification of his ephemeral activity. ‘Repassage people’  used the term ’action’, right in their opinion that this vague term allowed for the freedom of expression. Although in his later texts Krzyś used the terms ‘environment’ (speaking, e.g., about „Chair”) or ‘performance’ (speaking, e.g., about „Trace”), it does not mean that the terms were accurate. Krzyś’s environment provoked the spectators to action (destructive often enough) which turned the work into a process; a performance was nothing but a spectacle in which Krzyś, hidden backstage, controlled the human puppets. It may be said today that his works were also interventions, actions and installations; he may be considered, if we wish to define him so, one of the pioneers of body art in Poland. But, as far as I know, he was indifferent to any classification when he was actively involved in this kind of artistic activity and also later on.

The name ‘plastic theatre’, as he called his early works, seems most suitable; it is broad enough and expresses the essence oh his actions. „Art went beyond its limits, became unreal life in the same way as real life wanted to proclaim itself in artistic form” Krzyś wrote, summing up his activity in Repassage Gallery.*

Making life a theatre and as a consequence entering the sphere of ‘unreal life’. (I am aware of reversing the order in Krzyś’s sentence.) The life made a theatre was played in many fields and in front of different spectators, and it took many forms. It allowed the author to don a protective coat (not a mask!) which enabled him to be himself to the utmost,  both in street actions political in nature and also during private actions when he revealed his deepest emotions. The spectators felt it as a convention which allowed them to bring out concealed states and emotions, a safe one since it was shielded by art. What was impossible in life became real in the ‘plastic theatre’.

Years later Krzyś wrote: „...these were not ruminations upon ‘the essence of things’ but it was ‘a thing in itself’”. Fulfilment was achieved while ‘the theatre’ was played, among its participants. But Krzyś intended to go further. He wanted the closest people, who actively participated in the spectacle, to come back to life after leaving ‘the stage’ and to feel the new quality of living. He wanted his puppets to come back to life as people emotionally dependent on him. He expressed this desire in the following words: „We often transgressed the safe limits of form and entered a new sphere of experience”. Saying this he paved the way for interpretations, allowed for uncertain but tempting conjectures: how are we to understand the transgressions in Jung’s theatre?

Yes, yes, yes! Those, who say that Krzyś manipulated people, are right. He was capable of it and did it with mastery: he was handsome, he enveloped himself in an aura of an artist, and possessed specific erotic power of attraction which affected both men and women. Of course, not all who were ensnared could stay with him. Krzyś selected the people in his circle, often whimsically and unjustly, sometimes he purposefully chose those who played the roles he intended for them. Sometimes he became the victim of his fascinations, setting hopes on the person who did not surrender to him or was not fit. Then Krzyś suffered torments. He always wanted to be the one who dealt the cards and set the rules of the game. Although he was not always successful in his life, he often managed to achieve it in his theatre. It was a theatre in itself, intimate and wholly devised by the author only.

***

Threads were the basic material in most of his spectacles. Cotton, white or black, chosen in contrast to the background, often red, against the green grass, or significant in their colour when he filled the gallery room with a red tangle. The colour of the thread had a metaphoric sense to him; he wrote about the bodies of a woman and a man that they „were joined together  with a white thread, and  also connected with a black thread to a ‘metaphysical’ cloud hanging above them and finely woven”.

Krzyś discovered something which we did not suspect looking at a bobbin of thread - a spatial and expressive potential hidden in it. The threads he drew out revealed surprising qualities of the material. The structure of threads was made up of straight segments, irregularly criss-crossing and spreading in all directions. Since these countless segments were in fact one line, they formed a uniform                     self-supporting construction held by inner tensions, a strong springy tissue which was hard to break. When the spectators had to struggle through it, it came out that the apparently subtle calligraphy in the space was a trap. Breaking hundreds of threads did not destroy the tissue since the tangles went into thousands. When the slender and apparently weak threads bound the naked bodies, it soon turned out that they formed fetters which painfully cut into the skin and left marks.

The constructional properties of threads astonished the author himself when he started to incorporate a chair into his tangled structure. The chair began to lift, first imperceptibly and then more boldly, until it hung up above the floor. Krzyś used this phenomenon later on when he built another structure and climbed it, his limp body resting suspended in the tangles („Creating Through the Others and the Horizon of Freedom”). The threads also had another property, used in ‘plastic theatre’, which provided an opportunity for ‘transmission’. They made possible physical communication among the participants whose movements carried the tensions, pulls or ruptures, transmitted by the treads which joined them.

An observer, who came to look at Jung’s spectacle with the eyes of an aesthete, would see the studied light effects and a subtle ‘drawing’ described by the threads in the space, and ‘the acts’ - young and beautiful bodies silently representing ‘tableaux vivants’. He would see gestures and expressive manifestations, sometimes dramatic but  belonging to the classical cannon of beauty. This hypothetical seeker of art would see a mere surface. An external beauty of the picture would hide the rest.

It is paradoxical that the most successful artistic photographs taken during  Krzyś’s spectacles are also most misleading - the bodies of real people become anonymous acts arranged artistically.

If an act is a form aspiring to perfection, then it departs from life and turns the body into an object, even against the artist’s intentions. Nakedness, on the contrary, is trivial, firmly rooted in life. Not the ‘acts’ but real naked people were the co-authors in Jung’s theatre. „Naked body implies denudation, opening up, a direct drama, without a costume or a mask,” Krzyś wrote.

Nakedness was a mark of the participants as subjects of Krzyś’s theatre. They did not ‘act out’ as mimes; they bore a natural expression of concentration over what they were doing. Faces almost set, eyes looking ‘functionally’ at the partner, into space or within (half-closed). Directed at a given person, never at the audience.

They were - thanks to their bodies. Their bodies were subject to various procedures, they were fettered and tied up, the skin and hair took upon themselves the stitches, like a tailor’s dummy. The energy of their muscles made the stitches split when they were breaking their fetters. For each movement they paid with pain when the threads cut into their skin. With every inch of their bodies they felt that they were.

It seemed that that they forgot themselves in their carnality, that being naked in front of dressed people confirmed their identity, gave them more satisfaction than shame. Nakedness was a primeval state of being.

Of course, they followed the script which had been written for them, but they also gave an impression of acting in a trance. The presence of Krzyś who tangled them with threads indicated: you are subordinate. Later on, when he disappeared from sight and they started to move voluntarily, then they resembled puppets, pulled by an invisible hand.

The theatre without the audience was a kind of psychodrama, an experience in pure form, both for Krzyś and other participants. Jung engaged a man and two women from the circle of his closest friends for the rehearsals preceding the public show of „Love”. He took upon himself the role of Eros joining the couple. It might seem a kind of casting - choosing a suitable partner for the main male actor - but these procedures (the very selection) were, in fact, a test for three persons on friendly terms who were put in an ambiguous situation. Krzyś - a procurer - was naked during one rehearsal and dressed up during another, in both instances he tangled the couple in such a way that a close contact was impossible although it was the aim, an inevitable result of his procedures. Joining two persons with countless threads which restrained them from motion implied that any movement towards each other would give pain to the partner. The man and the woman became victims, of their own free will, and their pain became an essence of the experience called ‘love’.

The people invited to a spectacle of ‘plastic theatre’ were aware that what they participate in was inaccessible to the uninitiated - already at the start they felt favoured and obliged. Before they even noticed they were incorporated into the spectacle, physically combined with the action by means of threads tied to their feet and hands, and also emotionally involved  due to the aura of mystery, concentration and uncertainty as to what would happen to them. In a theatre where nakedness was a costume, the spectator, willy-nilly, became a voyeur. What is more, Krzyś deliberately connected the spectators and the actors, allowing for a direct physical transmission among them. The threads seemed to carry on emotions, but not of those who were naked - they had nothing to hide. It was the spectators who, in spite of being dressed up, uncovered themselves through their reactions. They became peeping Toms, while at the same time their pulse was felt.

***

When talking about ‘plastic theatre’, two early photographs of Krzyś seem of interest. One shows him posing with a naked torso by a tree trunk (St. Sebastian?). The other shows him in a pose of the Crucified. It is not known who took these photographs, whether they were meant to document some show (which is doubtful), or whether they were a study to some future work or an act of impersonation in front of a camera.

Years later a spectacle was given which had religious connotations and might have raised questions as to the author’s motives. The compound title „Creating Through the Others and the Horizon of Freedom” is also the author’s commentary upon his work. Let us remind ourselves : Krzyś rose from a pile of sand (a grave), built a kind of ladder from threads, climbed it and hung over the ground (he bore the expression of a dead hanging body). If we put aside, as incorrect, the association with resurrection and ascension (concluded with the second death?), then we should consider an association, close to the one mentioned above, with being taken out of ground (birth) and climbing up (life) concluded with the act of death when one has attained the level of ‘offering oneself’. Creating through the others would refer equally to the presence in statu nascendi of the witnesses of this spectacle and to the norms which had moulded the author. Krzyś was a believer and „observed fast”, so the religious interpretation is grounded here. Would the horizon of freedom imply then the acknowledged limitations to the dictates  taken from the Scripture? Is this supposed to be Krzyś’s official self-portrait?

***

Almost all his life Krzyś made self-portraits. The distinct traces, which he left in ‘plastic theatre’, may help us to compose his psychological portrait. In his action „Teach me, and I will hold my tongue: and cause me to understand wherein I have erred” (Job 6, 24) from 1982, he laid bare his emotions to few of his friends. He put us in position of witnesses since one man only was the target of his action. He was the mirror in which Krzyś wanted to see himself. The course of events depended upon the reaction of the addressee, even the slightest (no reaction came). There were also other instances when Krzyś made an introspection in public: a reply to Grzegorz Kowalski’s question „Would you like to return to your mother’s womb?” and a statement in the collection „I - Hitler” by Wiktor Gutt. Although the original collection „I - Hitler” was destroyed by one of the participants (she considered it an emanation of evil), Krzyś’s statement may be reconstructed. His response to the given subject was a newspaper cutting informing about an accident which he rarely mentioned. This was a very meaningful gesture - after much thought Krzyś revealed what he considered evil in himself. This had nothing to do with theatre. It was life itself, in all its dramatic truth.

The first spectacle of ‘plastic theatre’, presented in public, was the annex to his diploma, submitted in the Department of Plastic Design (June 1976). A naked man, tied to a chair and to a net which filled the space, trying to free himself - shocked the professors. The official supervisor  preferred to leave the matter in the hands of a senior lecturer who „was not  authorised to perform such functions” (Emil Cieślar, who as the only one defended the general idea of the project presented by the candidate for a degree). In the text to this action, Krzyś formulated the message of his work: domination of a  man over the objects he had created „turned into a servitude due to his inability to love the products of his creation”. He also demonstrated the awareness of technical issues in his projects, saying „...some of the spectators perceive the plastic action through their senses of hearing and touch, and involuntarily they become the actors for those who perceive only the visual aspects of the plastic action”. In his first show one may see the features of ‘plastic theatre’ fully developed in later works. On the formal level - affecting the spectators’ senses (touch) and including them  in the course of action; on the level of the author’s motives - a stipulation always put forward in theatre: the need for emotions, showing them and stirring in the participants.

The annex, documented on slides from the rehearsals of the diploma spectacle, presented in Repassage Gallery (1976), was considered a new version of the iconographic motif of „a man on a chair” - rumination upon human condition. ‘Functional’ purpose of the theatre - for the blind - was seen as the alibi of the student, as a matter of fact, of the department of design.

Thereafter  presentations of ‘plastic theatre’ were mostly held in Repassage Gallery, the spectators were first of all the artists and the people belonging to the gallery circle. It was also these people who voiced critical opinions. They criticised the convention of art (with capital A) accepted by Jung, the emphasis on the aesthetic quality of the spectacles, their bombastic style and literary overtones, and the  author’s intrusiveness. It must be remembered that the opponents were, to a lesser or greater degree, adherents to the theory of Open Form, had different views and different sensitivity than the author of ‘plastic theatre’.

When Krzyś’s environment was seen by someone (Paweł Freisler?) as the initiation of a process and ‘supplemented’ by various additions, there came to the first confrontation of attitudes. On the one side the opponents of a work of art closed in form; on the other side Jung who advocated the wholeness of his work. The conflict ensued from the revisionist attitude of ‘Repassage people’ to culture and social norms, from their critical drive (they were, in fact, socially-minded). Krzyś, however,  was a declared individualist, a romantic immersed in culture (poetry in particular). Jung’s works, strongly marked by his ego, caused a good deal of unfavourable comment, even rejection (and they still do). But there was something about this theatre which made it fit into the idea and the climate of Repassage Gallery, and which had to be acknowledged both by Jung’s adherents and opponents. His spectacles, attended by select audience, helped to create a feeling of community. Repassage Gallery was a friendly enclosure in the unfriendly world and Krzyś, together with his performers, fitted perfectly well in the gallery circle and territory. He contributed with another kind of stylistics and sensitivity which created strong ties among ‘Repassage people’. He eagerly participated in experiments and proposed initiatives, wholly involved in somebody else’s undertakings. It is hard to say to what extent the criticism he met in his own circle strengthened him in his opinions, to what extent he modified and developed his art because of this criticism. He always said that Repassage Gallery was his „second home” and „something more than a mere exhibition area”.

At Jungówka, at the bottom of a terrace garden, there is a place for bonfires where many a time, at night, antics were performed and also quite serious conversations took place. In the autumn of 1986 some friends we invited to a drinking party there. At some point Krzyś, already tipsy, appeared with a large parcel and announced that there would be a ceremony of his departure. He went up the slope, in darkness. Soon his silhouette could be discerned, bent, face lit - he was lighting a candle put in the grass. Then, somewhere higher, he lit another one, the fifth, and the tenth. Traversing the slope upward, he marked his stops. The slope was glowing with flickering lights. Now and then Krzyś disappeared, appeared again to light a candle, and disappeared in the dark - bright spots lit the grass, bushes and tree branches. Then he disappeared for good, vanished in the dark. We stayed in circle around the fire, watching this wonderful illumination, the slope glittering with dozens of little flames. The spots of lights shone unsteadily against the black night, barely revealing the outlines of trees and bushes, in the aura of the coming autumn. With half-shut eyes one could see the black getting blacker and the lights like jagged stars.

This was Krzyś theatre played for few persons, a lordly addition to a drinking party. A joke, quite serious today when we think about his departure. When I fed my eyes on this splendid view, I though of Krzyś dissolving in cosmos. (Sometimes, in an alcoholic daze, one may experience moments of enlightenment, worth remembering.) He goes uphill, always uphill, I thought. He has left us; he has not heard our applause, but left in the aura of our admiration.

The few texts written to people, rare publications, some more notes (made for his own use) are a priceless source of information for those interested in Krzyś’s artistic work. He always captivated me with his self-restraint concerning attempts to gain acknowledgement „on the vanity fair”, popularity or fame. It is a fact that he was mostly interested in people and life while art was to him a necessary addition to life. Sometimes he was possessively and euphorically in love, sometimes tragically unhappy when rejected. He knew his own worth as a human being and as an artist, and he expressed this conviction preceding his text about Repassage Gallery with a beautiful motto from The Land of Ulro by Miłosz. He granted to his art, not unfittingly, a right to have „magic influence just by invisible being”. He put below another motto, from Leśmian, interpreted today as an epitaph chosen in his lifetime:

„...And the body? Who in the whole universe will think about it

But me, the one who believes in it, loves it and fondles?...

...I pray for the immortality of your body...”
